Shapinsay Music Group meets every Thursday night for a tune during the winter months in one of the Club Rooms at the Shapinsay Community Centre. We start at 8pm and usually play until around about 10.30pm or so.
Our first meeting is usually in mid September, and we go on into April. From April to September we meet for an occasional tune. Some of us also play for island dances. One or two of us compose our own tunes and we enjoy playing these too. We play mostly traditional music from Scotland, including Orkney and Shetland of course, plus Faroese and Scandinavian tunes. However, if we like a tune, it does not matter where it comes from!! We'll play it. Instruments played include piano, accordion, fiddle, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, double bass, flute, mouth organ, mandolin and banjo. Other instruments would be most welcome.
The group has been meeting in one form or another since the 1950s at least. The main emphasis each evening is to play and have fun! We are not very serious although we try to play to our best ability!
These days we do not have many turn up. Perhaps half a dozen folk on a good night! So we really welcome anyone to come along to have a go and play with us. If you are not a player or just not sure if it is for you, we love it when people come along to listen and just enjoy our music. It is a very informal atmosphere, and we hope a welcoming one too.
The group is run by Ian Eunson and Paul Hollinrake. So if you want to find out anything more please ring Ian on 01856711241 or Paul on 01856711373. If you are visiting Shapinsay on holiday etc, please come along and join in or listen. We all contribute £1 each per session towards the use of the room to the Shapinsay Community Association funds.
